The Dragons and Cougars battled it out in a basketball showdown between two of Lower Manhattan’s middle schools on Friday. The Manhattan Academy of Technology Dragons and I.S. 289’s Cougars played a fierce game of ball this past week.
The girls teams played at 4 p.m., followed by boys at 5 p.m. on Fri., Dec. 14.
I.S. 289’s Lady Cougars, coached by Manhattan Youth, started strong in the first half of the game against the M.A.T. Dragons. The Cougars were led by Amy Wang, who had 5 points at the half for a 12-11 Cougar lead. The Dragons upped the pressure in the second half, causing turnovers from the opposing team in the third quarter. The Dragons took the lead in the fourth quarter, giving them the win over the Lady Cougars.
The final score was 29-23, to M.A.T. The high scorer for the M.A.T. Dragons was D. Ziripilo with a 12 point total. High scorer for the Cougars was Althea Jackson de Rosa, who ended the game with 10 points.
The boys’ game opened with intense heat from the M.A.T. Dragons — but they could not contain the I.S. 289 Cougars, led by Kobi Greene with 21 points. Teammate David Yourke chipped in with 8 points and 7 steals. The Cougars maintained their lead throughout the game, finishing with 49 points to 19 for the Dragons.
The Manhattan Youth and I.S. 289 Spirit Squad kept the crowd cheering and provided a high-energy half time performance.
