A man in his 30s was fatally struck by a Manhattan-bound Q train in the Newkirk Plaza station in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn Thursday morning, police officials said.
The victim, whom police have not yet identified, was struck at about 7 a.m. by the train as it entered the Newkirk Plaza station, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police officials.
The Manhattan-bound service was suspended for a short time and express service continued on the opposite track, but the Newkirk Avenue stop was skipped as police investigated the incident. The local track was shut down for more than two hours as police searched the track for evidence and the man’s property.
Police said they do not suspect a crime and believe the man was already on the tracks when the train pulled into the station, leading them to believe he may have committed suicide.
Shocked strap hangers looked on as police and transit officials investigated the scene.
“I just can’t believe it,” said one woman waiting for her train to Brighton Beach. “Why would someone do this at this joyous time of the year? So sad.”
