Mendez’s long march

rosie-2005-11-15_z

Joined by local elected officials and supporters, Rosie Mendez held a traditional get-out-the-vote march through the East Village and Lower East Side on the last Saturday before Tuesday’s general election. The Democratic and Working Families candidate for City Council in District 2 and the heavy favorite in the race, she faced opponents Claudia Flanagan, running on the Libertarian Party line, and John Carlino, running on the Republican and Independence Party lines. Below, Mendez, right, marched with Congressmember Carolyn Maloney. Above, Congressmember Nydia Velazquez joined them in shaking hands with residents. At right, though still a bit young to vote, a Mendez backer proudly proclaimed his political position. The march started at 12th Street and Avenue C and passed by the Jacob Riis and Lillian Wald Houses on Avenue D, by the Baruch Houses and down Columbia Street, ending at the Vladeck Houses.
