Two men are in cuffs, and another individual is in the hospital, after a Midtown Manhattan dispute escalated into a shooting Tuesday night just a block away from the iconic Macy’s Herald Square store.
Police sources said the trouble began at about 8 p.m. on June 11 near the corner of 33rd Street and Broadway, where a 33-year-old man became embroiled in an argument with four other individuals that devolved into a melee.
Witnesses said the scene quickly turned chaotic.
“Some guy hit someone with a bike and some guy pulled out a knife — it was crazy,” local Owen Mumma-Brman said. “It’s usually safe over here. People play ping pong, there are police all over, it’s one of the safest places.”
Police said the combatants used chairs and even a bike to attack their foes. During the escalating dispute, law enforcement sources reported, one person pulled out a gun and shot the 33-year-old victim in the left leg.
EMS rushed the man to Bellevue Hospital where he is said to be in stable condition.
Officers from the Midtown South Precinct descended upon the crime scene, sectioning off a large portion of the bloodstained concrete and combing over the area with flashlights.
During the investigation, law enforcement sources said, two suspects — 34-year-old Mamadou Dialo of the Bronx and 31-year-old Mamadou Balde of the Garment District — were taken into custody and later charged with second-degree assault.
The suspected shooter, meanwhile, remains on the lam and was last seen fleeing southbound on Broadway riding a scooter, police reported.
