More frequent Gov Isle ferries

Ferries to Governors Island will run more frequently starting this weekend.

On Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day, the free ferries will run every half hour from the Battery Maritime Building at South and Whitehall Sts. to Governors Island. Previously, the ferries ran hourly on most weekends but more frequently if there was a special event.

The Governors Island Preservation and Education Corp. bumped up the ferry service because the island has drawn record-breaking crowds this summer, surpassing the 100,000-visitor mark last weekend.

Ferry service will remain hourly on Fridays and will return to hourly on Saturdays and Sundays after Labor Day, through Oct. 11, when the island closes for the season.

Those looking for a good reason to visit (or revisit) the island — beside the views, car-free bike paths and historic buildings — will find a new addition this weekend: The hammocks at Picnic Point will be joined by new sets of swings.
