In Tompkins Square, above and below, Washington Square and other parks around the city, New Yorkers chipped in for MulchFest ’09. Old, dried-out Christmas trees were reduced in minutes to mulch, which will be used in city parks. Resident mulchers also got to take some of the stuff home for their own use. Above, Richard Caplan, his son, Hunter, and wife, Shonelle, took their tannenbaum to the Tompkins ’Fest over the weekend. “We picked out the tree together as a family and we are dropping it off together for a good cause,” said Richard. “It also brings a finality to the season.”
