The demolition of Pier 64 at W. 24th St. in Chelsea recently got underway. Marine demolition workers contracted by the Hudson River Park Trust are removing the pier shed, after which the pier deck will be removed and new concrete piles pounded into the river bottom to support a rebuilt pier. The rebuilt open pier will have grass and trees and will look a bit like the rebuilt Christopher St. Pier in the Village segment of the park, said Robert Trentlyon, president of the Chelsea Waterside Park Association. The entire project should take about two years, Trentlyon said. It was key that the pier be open and not have a shed, Trentlyon said, since the Manhattan shoreline bends at 23rd and 24th Sts., making the pier a great vantage point. From the end of the pier, “You get great views either way,” he said.
