Andrew Berman, director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, spoke at an emergency rally to save the old Tunnel Garage at Broome and Thompson Sts. on Friday. Behind him, the long-covered Model T Ford medallion on the garage’s corner was finally visible after a “24-hr. Parking” sign was recently removed in preparation for the building’s demolition. The garage was built in anticipation of the Holland Tunnel’s construction and was one of the first built specifically for cars, rather than being a converted stable. A residential building is planned on the site. Chances of the building being landmarked appear slim.
