NYC hurricanes and tropical storms: Learn more about the city’s major weather events

The 2016 Atlantic hurricane season began on Wednesday, June 1, 2016.

This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting a near-normal hurricane season, with a 70-percent likelihood of between 10 and 16 named storms in the Atlantic Ocean. Of those storms, NOAA predicts between four and eight could become hurricanes.

Whether any hurricane will hit the New York City area remains to be seen, but the beginning of the season is an important reminder of how dangerous and destructive hurricanes can be.
