Old New York photos: JFK, Alfred Hitchcock and a Nazi summer camp

A collection of 30,000 recently digitized historic and rare images of New York City and surrounding suburbs has been made available online for the first time by the Municipal Archives.

They include a series of images showing political groups taken by the New York Police Department’s Alien Squad, which monitored political activists; early airplane and train crashes; and the ticker tape parade for then-presidential candidate John F. Kennedy in October 1960.

This brings the total number of images in the Municipal Archives’ online gallery to nearly one million.

Here are a few highlights from the newly available images.

More images will be featured on the archives’ blog.
