A 12-inch water main at Bleecker and Carmine Sts. broke at about 4:30 p.m. Fri., April 8, and the same main broke between Bleecker St. and Sixth Ave. a few feet south at about 1 p.m. Tues., April 12. The April 8 break brought police and a Department of Environmental Protection repair crew to the intersection where Our Lady of Pompei Church stands. Police redirected traffic for the rest of the day and the D.E.P crew repaired the break, which did only minor damage to nearby buildings. Some residual water collected in the church basement but did not disrupt weekend Masses. The April 12 break cut off water service to more than 100 apartments and was being repaired at press time. A D.E.P. spokesperson didn’t have an answer when asked if water mains’ bursting is connected to the rising spring temperatures.
