Mah-jong, the Chinese game once popular with Jewish immigrants on the Lower East Side, is now more commonly played by Chinese immigrants in the neighborhood. Both groups came out to play Sunday for the annual Egg Roll and Egg Creams Block Party celebrating both cultures. The event is sponsored by the Eldridge Street Project, originally formed to restore the historic Eldridge Street Synagogue. The event was on Eldridge St. of course, which is Chinatown to some, the L.E.S. to others.
