Students at P.S. 89 and their siblings recently collected 45 backpacks to give to children affected by Hurricane Katrina. They stuffed the bags with school supplies, books and personal items such as handmade necklaces, as part of a program organized by Volunteers for America.
Many of the students at the Battery Park City school also sent letters. Here are two:
Dear lst or 2nd grader,
I hope you like these school supplies and backpack. I am sorry you lost your home and everything of yours. Here are some things to start again. I hope you find a good school and a great home. I was near the World Trade Center when it got knocked down and had to leave for a year. People were nice to me and gave me things. I know your situation was much worse, but I hope you get the same love people gave to me.

We are so sorry for what you and your family went through with Hurricane Katrina. We hope you’re able to go back to your school or you can go to a new school. We hope this backpack and these supplies help.
