The plan to build a marine transfer station for recyclable waste on the Gansevoort Peninsula, which is to become an extension of the Hudson River Park, will be the subject of a 6:30 p.m. public hearing on Mon., Jan. 3, at 75 Morton St.
The waterfront committee of Community Board 2 will sponsor the hearing on the plan, proposed by the Department of Sanitation along with the Economic Development Corporation and the Hudson River Park Trust, the state-city authority that is building and operates the park.
The peninsula, which extends into the Hudson River between Little W. 12th and Gansevoort Sts., is a remnant of the Lower West Side landfill created in the mid-19th century that once extended to a 13th Ave.
A former sanitation marine transfer station on the west side of the peninsula would be rebuilt as a new environmentally efficient station, an E.D.C. spokesperson said at an earlier hearing in September.
The enclosed transfer station would serve also as an educational center and could be built without interfering with plans for the future park, the E.D.C. spokesperson said. The transfer station would also fund construction of the peninsula park on a fast-track schedule, according to testimony in September.
