Pianist will be key at free concert

Celebrating its 68th season, the 60-member Doctors Orchestra will present a free concert on Thurs. March 9 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the High School for Health Professions, 345 E. 15th St. (between First and Second Aves.). The concert will feature Ilya Yakuchev as soloist in the Saint-Saens “Second Piano Concerto.” Yakuchev is a recent gold medal and first-prize winner of the World Piano Competition. The concert will also include the rarely heard “Spring Song” by Sibelius, plus Mendelssohn’s  “Fourth Symphony” (“The Italian”). The concert will be under the direction of Peter Bellino, internationally renowned conductor and chairman of composition at Mannes College.

The Doctors Orchestra was founded in 1938 and has performed in New York’s major concert halls. In addition to performing free orchestral concerts in the New York community for more than 60 years, it often donates its services benefiting worthy causes. It also often provides the opportunity for young soloists to appear with an orchestra.
