Planning Commission O.K.’s Council

action on Hudson Sq. north zoning

The City Planning Commission on Monday decided to accept the City Council’s action last month rejecting residential development in the north end of the Hudson Sq. manufacturing district and in favor of residential uses in the south end of the district.

The decision means that the proposal will go back to the City Council on Tues. Aug. 19 and will become part of the zoning code a week later after Mayor Bloomberg signs it.

City Planning had originally proposed a single zoning amendment allowing mixed-used residential and manufacturing development in the north end bounded by Morton and Barrow Sts., Hudson, Clarkson and West Sts., and allowing new residential development and existing manufacturing uses in the south end bounded by Spring, Hudson, Canal and Washington Sts.

But Community Board 2, City Councilmember Christine Quinn and various West Village groups prevailed on the Council to separate the proposals for the north and south. Quinn said last week that most people were against allowing residential development in the north end because it would effectively eliminate manufacturing, while increasing real estate costs. Planning’s acceptance of the Council action virtually guarantees passage next week.
