Blue Jays vs. Mariners, Minors
Starting the game with a solo home run, the Blue Jays’ Jess Coleman set the pace for his team in their 14-1 victory against the Mariners. While Coleman picked up a double and a total of 4 R.B.I. in the first inning, hitting was strong across the Jays’ bench as Darby Northington went 3 for 3 on the day, with a total of 5 R.B.I. Lucas Ortega and Rahul Khana provided solid pitching performances as they held the Mariners to only one run during the contest.
A’s vs. Orioles, Minors
The minor division A’s clawed their way back from a 7-3 deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 10-9 victory from the Orioles last Saturday. After a series of lead changes, with the Orioles ahead 9-8 in the A’s last at-bat, the A’s picked up a series of clutch hits and walks from Mason Grassfield, Nico Michaels, Harrison Hatton, and Eamon Gallagher to take the victory. The A’s pitching was led by Hatton, Gabe Kleiman and Wes Loving.
Reds vs. Astros, Majors
During last Friday’s game against the Reds, a combination of stellar defense and hot hitting allowed the Astros to win 9-0. The Astros jumped out to a quick lead with Luke Shapiro’s three-run homer. Consecutive hits by Sam Fishman, Nikhil Tekchandani, and Cal Cook brought home another run, while the Astros went on another four-run rally in the second inning with doubles by JJ Franco and Tekchandani. The third inning was a defensive gem for the Reds when centerfielder Johncarlo Pecorari robbed Luke Shapiro and Wyatt Leach of homeruns, stranding Zane Holmes and Jake Shapiro each one singling prior to the catches. The Reds would not get on base until Nicky Morton’s hit in the fifth inning. Morton pitched well but couldn’t match JJ Franco’s performance as he allowed no hits in the first four innings, going the entire game with no walks and 15 strike outs. Miles Schuck came in to pitch for the Reds and was impressive, holding the Astros to only one more run in the 4th and 5th innings.
Rockies vs. Astros, Majors
Luke Shapiro led the Astros’ team both on offense and defense in Sunday’s narrow 8-7 win over the Rockies. Shaprio, who had the game winning hit in the fifth inning before stealing two bases to get the go ahead run, also provided relief on the mound, allowing no walks and four strikeouts. Jake Shapiro started the game for the Astros and held them scoreless in the first, with the aid of Wyatt Leach’s amazing diving catch in right field, which robbed the Rockies’ Kyle Maer of a base hit. Nikhil Tekchandani also contributed to the Astros’ defensive effort by making amazing plays at second base during the game. The Astros led 6-3 after three innings with the hitting by Leach and Jake Shapiro.
The Astros defense fell apart shortly thereafter, committing three errors and allowing the Rockies to rally on hits by Maer and Sean Wils while Felix Chmiel’s beautiful triple tied the game in the fourth. Excellent pitching from the Rockies’ Wils and Ryan Rackower kept a potent Astros offense in check. The Astros’ Luke Shapiro came in to pitch at the end of the fourth inning, stranding runners and getting the Astros out of a jam. An Astro error in the fifth allowed a runner to eventually score on a passed ball and give the Rockies a 7-6 lead, but the Astros’ Jake Shapiro tied the contest by drawing a walk and stealing two bases before scoring on a passed ball himself. Shapiro sealed the Astros’ victory with his game-winning hit in the fifth.
