Waterfront construction
Contractor employees at the construction site at Pier 25 on the southwest corner of West and N. Moore Sts. told police that burglars stole equipment and about 4,500 lbs. of copper cable and bars, with a total estimated value of between $15,000 and $20,000 between 3:30 p.m. Fri., July 2 when the site was locked for the Fourth of July weekend and 5 a.m. Tues., July 6. The locked fence at the site was intact, police said. The material might have been removed from the site by boat from a barge at the pier, police said.
ATM looted
A burglar drilled a hole in the lock of an ATM outside the Tribeca Grand Hotel at the intersection of White and Church Sts. with Sixth Ave. sometime between 3:34 p.m. Wed., June 30 and 9 a.m. July 2, and stole an estimated $6,880, police said. An employee of Bank Express told police he had put 420 twenty-dollar bills ($8,400) in the machine on June 30 and after the last recorded transaction on July 1 there were 344 bills remaining.
Snatched wallet at ATM
A Westchester man was withdrawing money from an ATM in the Valley National branch at 170 Hudson St. near Vestry St. around midnight Mon., July 5 when a stranger started a conversation and then grabbed the victim’s wallet and fled, police said. When the victim cancelled his bankcard he learned that a total of $1,750 had been stolen from his account at various ATMs on W. Broadway between Canal and Broome Sts., Canal and Thompson Sts., Canal St. and Broadway and at the Valley National branch where the snatch occurred, police said.
Summer cold?
Employees of the Duane Reade store at 459 Broadway at Grand St. told police that two men entered the store shortly after 10 a.m. Sun., July 4, filled a shopping basket with 110 packages of over-the-counter cough and cold medicine valued at $2,428, then transferred the merchandise to a black plastic garbage bag and walked out of the place. The theft was recorded on surveillance tape and the suspects were described as black men, one about 6’2” and thin, the other 5’8” medium build.
Return to the scene
Employees at the Equinox gym, 14 Wall St., called police at 11 p.m. Wed., June 30 when they recognized a familiar face. Police arrested Trey Burton, 24, and charged him with grand larceny. The week before on Wed., June 23, a gym patron who turned his back on his open locker saw a man who grabbed his wallet from his pants hanging in the locker and fled. Gym attendants who caught a glimpse of the fleeing suspect stopped him when he reappeared seven days later. Burton confessed to the arresting officer about the earlier theft. At his arrest he was found in possession of a forged credit card.
Laptop with legs
An employee at Animazing, the animated art boutique at 54 Greene St., told police shortly before 6 p.m. Thurs., July 1 that a surveillance camera in the shop recorded a man and a woman taking a laptop computer from the desk around 2:30 p.m. that day. The man put the Apple laptop in his pants and walked out with his accomplice, police said.
Back room bag
A visitor, 16, from Istanbul, Turkey, told police that she forgot her bag in the Starbucks at 116 Broadway near Pine St. when she left the place at 9:30 p.m. Thurs., July 1 and went back at 8:30 a.m. the following morning to retrieve it. The night crew had left a note that the bag was in the back room of the coffee shop but the day crew told her there was no bag there. The victim lost the $800 Marc Jacobs bag, two wallets valued at $300 each, a digital camera, $200 cash and her Turkish visa.
Steals shopper’s bag
A Brooklyn woman, 23, told police she was shopping in the American Eagle store, 575 Broadway near Prince St., on Saturday evening, July 3, placed her bag on a counter at 8:40 p.m., turned away for five minutes and discovered it was gone when she turned back around. She lost a debit card, personal ID, $40 cash and an iPod valued at $200 in addition to the Coach bag.
Gone from bag
An Upper West Side woman put her wallet in her handbag after buying a MetroCard at 86th St. and Central Park W. at 10 a.m. Thurs., July 1 on her way to work at a beauty salon on Broadway near White St. At 6 p.m. as she was leaving work, she discovered the wallet, with $120 cash, credit cards and driver’s license, was gone.
Bank card stolen
A resident of Chinatown told police on Sat., July 3 that his bankcard, which he had last seen at 7 p.m. Thurs., July 1 while he was dining with friends at Seahorse restaurant, 42 Peck Slip, had been stolen. Two unauthorized charges totaling $178 had been made on the bank card to buy MetroCards, police said.
Unprovoked assault
A woman resident of the Grand St. Co-ops was walking on the northeast corner of Sixth Ave. and 14th St. on Sunday evening, July 4, when a man rushed up at 7:15 p.m., threw her to the pavement and fled. The victim was taken to Bellevue where she was treated and released.
Jailhouse theft
Two men being held in the Tombs on Sun., July 4, grabbed another detainee’s gold chain around 7 p.m., according to the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. Tracey Tallerico, 47, and Richard Hicks, 54, were charged with robbery and criminal possession of stolen property.
