Madison St. shooting
Gunfire in the Alfred Smith houses at 2:53 a.m. Wed. Sept. 1 brought police to the scene in front of 46 Madison St. where Anthony Evans, 28, was found with a gunshot wound to the head, another to the torso and a third to the right arm. An Emergency Medical Service team took Evans to New York Downtown Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
Police are asking the public for information on Pierre Hecker, 29, a resident of 1295 Fifth Ave. in Schomburg Plaza on E. 110th St., in connection with the shooting. Hecker is described as a black man, 6 ft. tall and 180 lbs. After pumping three bullets into the victim, the gunman reportedly fled on foot towards 388 Pearl St. on the other side of the Smith houses.

Investigating burglaries
Police are investigating the July burglary of a woman resident of the Hallmark, a seniors residence at 455 North End Ave. in Battery Park City. The burglary of jewelry valued at $30,000 occurred on a weekend the victim was away from her apartment, according to her daughter. “My mother could not put her own lock to her door and was encouraged to notify the desk when she would be leaving overnight and when she expected to return,” the victim’s daughter said. “The jewelry that was taken from my mother were the last gifts my father gave to her when she died,” the daughter said, adding that her mother moved out of the Hallmark in the middle of August.
An earlier burglary at the Hallmark reported in Downtown Express was on Jan. 4 of this year when a 90-year-old woman discovered jewelry valued at $7,000, which she had last seen two months earlier, was missing from her bedroom.
On Tues., Aug. 10, an 84-year-old woman resident of the Hallmark told police that her watch and three rings, last seen two months earlier, were stolen from her apartment.
Backpack picked
A woman visiting from Wiltshire, England, told police she went walking with a friend at 9:30 p.m. Wed., Sept. 1 and when they returned to the friend’s apartment at 49 Warren St. she discovered her backpack zipper was open and her wallet was gone. The victim, 21, lost $500 cash, an iPad, debit cards and her University of Durham ID. She told police she did not remember being jostled.
Bank job
A man who walked into the Wachovia Bank branch, 463 Broadway at Grand St. at 11:50 a.m. Thurs., Sept. 3 passed a note to a teller demanding money and fled with $2,150 and a dye pack which exploded after he crossed Broadway, police said. The robber dropped the dye pack but escaped with the money, police said. The suspect was described as a white Hispanic male, about 29, 5’9” and 155 lbs., wearing blue shorts and possibly a blue baseball cap.
Motorcycle theft
A man who locked his yellow 2008 Yamaha motorcycle in front of 336 Albany St., at 6 a.m. Thurs., Sept. 2 and returned at 2 p.m. to find it had been stolen, police said.
Bag on chair
A woman who went to China Chalet, 47 Broadway for supper at 12:05 a.m. Sun., Sept. 5 hung her bag on the back of her chair and went to the bathroom, When she returned to her table the bag was missing. However, she found it however on another table but her wallet with personal ID and bankcards was gone.
Sportsman’s loss
A man, 22, who joined a basketball game on the east side of West St. at Liberty St. at 7:30 p.m. Thurs., Sept., 2 left his bag at the side of the court and discovered it was stolen at the end of the game, police said. He lost debit cards and his unemployment registration card.
Stolen from school
A teacher at the new P.S. 276 at 55 Battery Pl., told police that her wallet was stolen from her bag inside the building school on Fri., Sept. 3. She lost bankcards, personal ID and $70 in cash. She was in the school preparing for the Sept. 7 opening day.
Shopper ripped off
A woman who was shopping at the Scholastic bookstore at 130 Mercer St. on Friday afternoon Sept. 3 lost her wallet to a thief who dipped into her bag. The victim discovered her bag was open and the wallet gone at 3:45 p.m., police said.
Taxi basher
Police arrested Miguel Ortiz, 32, on Wed., Aug. 25 and charged him with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment for swinging a bicycle chain and smashing the windows and denting the hoods of five cabs parked on Cortlandt St. at Trinity Pl. around 3 p.m.
