Injured youth dies
Adrian Vargas, 16, of 75 Stanton St., who was shot in the chest the night of Feb. 29 at the corner of E. Third St. and Avenue D, died at Bellevue Hospital of his wounds on Wed. March 17, police said. Angel Diaz, 19, of 709 FDR Dr. in the Lillian Wald Houses, who was arrested for the crime on March 10 and charged with aggravated assault and criminal possession of a .45-caliber handgun, was recharged with second-degree murder and weapons possession, police said.
Love is all we need
Courtney Love, 39, the rock performer and widow of the late Kurt Cobain, was brought scantily dressed to the Ninth Precinct during the early hours of Thurs. March 18 and charged with misdemeanor assault and reckless endangerment for tossing a microphone stand into the audience and injuring a patron at Plaid on E. 13th St. south of Union Sq.
Love’s unscheduled promotion appearance at the nightclub was before a crowd of rock celebrities and fans, several of whom told reporters that it didn’t look as if Love deliberately tried to hit anyone. The patron, Gregory Burgett, of London, Ky., received three staples in his scalp.
Just before going to Plaid, Love was reported to have flashed a bare breast at the Australian band Jet at Irving Plaza and vainly tried to go onstage with them. And just prior to that she is reported to have bared a bosom outside Wendy’s on the south side of Union Sq. where someone kissed it while photographers took pictures. Earlier in the day, she flashed David Letterman during a taping of his TV show.
Love is due to appear in court April 19 in connection with the assault charge.
Fire in the holes
Fire in two Con Edison manholes on Avenue B near E. 12th St. at 8:30 p.m. on Tues. March 16 spread to an electrical box in the basement of 183 Avenue B where it caused an explosion that knocked down a firefighter who was treated at Bellevue Hospital for unspecified injuries.
Fire Department officials temporarily evacuated four buildings in the neighborhood after Con Edison cut power to make repairs. A Con Ed spokesperson said the incident was being investigated and that it was not certain that the manhole fires were related to the explosion.
Bias graffiti
Transit police last week found eight swastikas written on columns in the IND subway station at Second Ave. and Houston Sts. The Nazi symbols were on the northbound platform and police are investigating the bias incident.
Chinatown bank burglary
The manager of Abacus Federal Savings Bank at 6 Bowery told police that he discovered upon opening the bank on the morning of March 20 that burglars had broken into the safe deposit vaults sometime during the night and made off with an undetermined amount of money and contents from the boxes. The burglars, who somehow bypassed the alarm system, entered through a backdoor and cut through the vault safe with a torch

The First Precinct Community Council meeting for the Downtown residential community will be at 7 p.m. Tues. March 30 at the Wall St. Rising Downtown Information Center on the ground floor of 25 Broad St.
Find boy in Brooklyn
Yo Ikui, 13, visiting from Japan and speaking no English, was reported missing from where he was staying at 234 W. 14th St. at 1 p.m. Sat. March 20, but Transit police found him at 6:05 a.m. the following day at the corner of Hoyt and Schermerhorn Sts. in Brooklyn.
River death
Harbor police retrieved the body of a man identified only as black and between the ages of 35 and 45 from the Hudson River off W. 35th St. at Sat. March 20. No criminality was suspected and the Medical Examiner is investigating the cause of death.
