Millenium Fire
A fire broke out in level C of the Millenium Hotel basement at 55 Church St. and was reported by phone to firefighters at 2:30 p.m. Thurs. Sept. 11, after the World Trade Center ceremonies, a fire department spokesperson said.
The internal fire line and the sprinkler system kicked in and 12 firefighting units responded. A Millenium spokesperson said the hotel across the street from the W.T.C., was evacuated for half an hour. The fire was out by 3:30 p.m., the fire department said. Cause of the fire was not determined.
Teen rampage reported
A group of teenagers rampaged through Spring, Varick and Dominick Sts. in Hudson Sq. at about 5:30 p.m. Mon. Sept. 15 according to witnesses and police at the First Precinct.
Carole De Saram, a Tribeca resident who was going home at the time, said she saw the group beating a bicycle messenger in the street at the intersection of Varick and Spring Sts. and strewing the contents of his bag in the street. She said there were more than a dozen black youngsters, boys and girls, ranging in ages between 12 and 16, chasing a victim through the Manhattan Storage parking lot that extends from Spring to Dominick Sts. between Hudson and Varick Sts.
An attendant at Manhattan Storage, whose glass-front counter faces the parking lot, said he saw about seven or eight youths running through the parking space and walked out to investigate. “I surmise from what they were saying and from their manners that they were gay kids who were angry at someone who called them fags,” he said.
The desk sergeant at the First Precinct said the incident was “a group of disorderly adolescents – unruly kids. They were sent on their way. There were no charges of assault or theft.”
Remains found
Police were summoned to 90 West St. at 3:45 p.m. Mon. Sept. 8 when construction workers found human remains on the 20th floor scaffolding of the 24-story building at the corner of West and Liberty Sts. across the street from the World Trade Center site. The scaffolding has been up for five years, police said.
No 9/11 arrests
There were no arrests near the Sept. 11 commemoration at the World Trade Center site last week, police said. But a spokesperson confirmed that a Daily News photographer was escorted from the pit where the families of victims were gathered.
