Chinatown killing
A shooting at Yung Sun Seafood restaurant, 47 East Broadway, on Wednesday night, June 17 ended in the death of Ming Wang, 43, owner of several New Jersey restaurants, according to law enforcement officials. Police are seeking another New Jersey restaurant owner, a business rival of the victim, for questioning.
The shooting occurred shortly after 6 p.m. in the crowded restaurant where the victim had a conversation with an Asian man who walked out of the place but returned a few minutes later and fired eight shots into the head, left arm, chest and groin of the victim, according to police.
The victim was taken to New York Downtown Hospital where he died a short time after arrival.
East River body
Police retrieved the body of an unidentified woman from the East River near Pier 42 off Montgomery St. at 10:40 a.m. Thurs. June 16. The Medical Examiner’s office is investigating the cause of death of the victim described only as a white woman between 30 and 35 years old.
Strong arm on Canal
Two muggers attacked and robbed a motorist who was fixing a flat tire at 12:30 a.m. Mon. June 10 on Sixth Ave. at Canal St., police said. The victim told police that one of the robbers came from behind, grabbed his arm, reached into his pocket and took $185 while the other grabbed him by the neck and choked him.
Soho school arrests
The Chelsea Vocational High School students who were arrested for assault on Mon. June 13 as a result of a disturbance on Thompson St. near Broome St. were identified as Akiem Fagon, 17, and Stedman R. Ferguson, 18, both of Brooklyn, and Michael Robinson, 17, of the Bronx.
The following day, three girls from the school on Sixth Ave, and Spring St. were charged with assault in connection with an 11:25 a.m. fight on Thompson and Spring Sts., according to Capt. Anthony Bologna, First Precinct commanding officer.
The incidents occurred during the last week of the school year when restrictions on leaving the school building were not being strictly enforced, Bologna said.
Fulton St. burglary
The manager of an office at 112 Fulton St. told police on Sat., June 11 that burglars entered the premises the night before, broke into several strong boxes and took an undetermined amount of cash and property.
Assault on E. Broadway
A group of teenagers beat a 17-year-old victim at 8:40 p.m. Monday June 20 on E. Broadway at Jefferson St., police said. The victim, Mitchell Hartfield, was taken to Bellevue for observation and released. The attackers, identified only as male Asian teenagers, fled and police are investigating the case.
Hold the phone
The manager of an office that was moving from the fourth to the seventh floor of 11 Broadway found out after the move was completed on June 9 that the office digital phone system was gone, police said.
Newsstand robbery
Two thieves stole $4,000, several cartons of cigarettes and punched the attendant of a newsstand at 30 Park Row on Tues. June 14, police said. One of the robbers started an argument with the attendant while the other went behind the counter, punched the attendant and pulled a knife on her, police said.
Motorcycle theft
The owner of a motorcycle parked in front of 4 New York Plaza at Broad and Water Sts. on Friday night June 6 saw four men hoisting his bike into a white van. The thieves fled with the bike before the owner could stop them, police said.
Bag stolen
A patron of a bar at 89 South St. in the Seaport area left her bag on a bench on Thursday night June 9 and found it gone when she returned from the ladies room a few minutes later, police said.
Soho transformer fire
A transformer explosion in a Con Edison underground substation in front of 172-174 Mercer St. at Houston St. at 7 p.m. Thurs. June 16 resulted in a fireball that injured a pedestrian and scorched the side of the building, according to a Fire Department spokesperson.
The injured man was taken to the New York Hospital Burn Center with second degree burns on the back of his head. A possible short circuit in a cable is being investigated as a cause of the explosion, a Con Ed spokesperson said.
