City Council Speaker Christine Quinn was the keynote speaker at the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s 46th annual commencement ceremony on Mon., June 6 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Quinn, who is known for her advocacy in early childhood education, previously hosted the New York City Higher Education Taskforce on student wellness and anti-bullying at the B.M.C.C.
Now, she is involved in a launch aimed at increasing job opportunities around the city. “It’s hard enough in this tough economy to find a good-paying job,” said Quinn. “We need to connect those looking for work with the essential skills for people to head out to the workforce.”
“B.M.C.C. taught me all the technical skills I need to work in production,” said valedictorian Lorraine Singletary, an aspiring film director. “The media arts professors here always reminded me that I have my own style and voice. My B.M.C.C. professors encouraged me to bring my artistic visions to the next level.”
