Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed four bills last Thursday morning to tighten safety requirements in the wake of the Deutsche Bank fire. Looking over his shoulder were Councilmember Alan Gerson, a sponsor of the bills, and Joseph Graffagnino Sr., whose son was one of two firefighters killed in the August 2007 fire. The bills are part of a legislation package to enhance coordination between city agencies and increase oversight at construction, demolition and asbestos abatement sites in the city.
“It’s another step forward,” Graffagnino said before the signing ceremony. “There’s another set of city bills that are still to come forward. It’s a gratifying feeling but it’s just one of many steps on the road we have to take. There’s a lot of work still to be done.”
