Extra pickles, hold the dust.
Several hundred iron workers building World Trade Center Tower 1, a k a the Freedom Tower, will soon have a convenient place to eat lunch. Part of a new Subway sandwich shop was hoisted up to the tower’s fifth floor Wednesday, and the full restaurant with seating and bathrooms should be open at the end of January.
Richard Schragger, the store’s owner and manager, said the menu will actually be larger than most Subways, offering breakfast, hot dogs and hamburgers in addition to the sandwiches and sodas.
“It’s an easy operation,” he said. “There’s no cooking involved except for baked cookies and baking bread in the oven. Everything else is easy to prepare and ready to go.”
He said DCM Erectors was looking for a way to cut down on the time iron workers spent going up and down to go to lunch, so it is building the space for Subway. The first of nine containers went up Wednesday. As the tower continues to rise, so will the restaurant. Schragger said Subway will be doing a lot of composting to cut down on the waste and materials that’ll need to be brought down every day.
He declined to disclose the financial arrangements of the deal, but said the motivation came from DCM, and was not for Subway to launch a high-profile marketing campaign.
