Members of the Caring Community Senior Center at First Presbyterian Church, on Fifth Ave. and W. 11th St., which was closed down on June 28, held a rally in front of the church on July 2 with Norman Siegel, a civil rights lawyer who joined the rally to support “Senior Power.” Penny Johnson, leader of the group, announced the formation of the Senior Action Movement. Johnson said that the proposal to send seniors to the other Caring Community centers at Our Lady of Pompei Church, at Bleecker and Carmine Sts.; 20 Washington Square North; and 310 Greenwich St. in Tribeca, would overburden those centers. “I hope this is the beginning of a senior rights movement in the city,” Siegel said. “We need to hold public and private agency officials accountable. We need more services for seniors, not less.”
