Welcoming the spring season volunteers can help to plant more than 500 flowers at Wall Street Park. As part of the Downtown Alliance’s “Going Green Downtown” initiative, volunteers will also be able to help clean the park and help revive the existing soil. Planting tools, compost and cedar mulch will be supplied by sponsoring organizations.
With its first launch of over 200 people last year, Liz Berger, the Alliance’s president and a Downtown resident, says the day brings out the best in people and in the area. “It feels great to get out, roll up your sleeves and get to work with neighbors, old friends and even people you don’t know,” Berger said in a phone interview. “We want to make Lower Manhattan beautiful and do it in a way that highlights the greenness of the area. It’s a good opportunity to do something in the community, for the community that’s lasting.”
The Alliance has 340 annuals to be placed in the parks fountain and birch tree area, and 200 perennials for the remainder of the park. Refreshments will be served throughout the day.
Spring Community Planting Day 2009 will be on Sun., May 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wall Street Park, between Front and South Sts.
