Sweet bay magnolia blossoms blooming…
The Hudson River Park Trust planted three sweet bay magnolias on April 22 in the park’s Greenwich Village segment near Pier 51 south of Gansevoort St. The sweet bay is a multi-stem tree with a dark green leaf color accented with a distinctive silvery underside. In the spring it yields white-and-pink flowers, which produce a lemon sent. Found along the East Coast, the sweet bay was introduced in this country in the early 18th century and is often seen near streams and wetlands. “When we received notice these trees were available for planting this spring, I saw an opportunity to recognize Earth Day and affirm the park’s commitment to both the environment and education,” said Charles “Trip” Dorkey, III, Trust chairperson. “Although these trees are only three of the hundreds that Hudson River Park has brought to the West Side, they symbolize the Trust’s commitment to reconnecting the people of New York with nature and their beautiful waterfront,” said Connie Fishman, Trust president.
