Last Thursday, about 75 bicycle riders participated in a memorial ride for three cyclists who were killed by trucks while riding on New York City streets last month. The ride started on the Hudson River Park bikeway at W. 38th St., where Dr. Carl Nacht, 56, was hit by a Police Department tow truck on June 22, suffering head injuries that led to his death three days later. The ride then proceeded in the pouring rain to Houston St. and LaGuardia Pl., where on June 26, Derek Lane, 23, a School of Visual Arts graduate, was killed after his bike slipped on a steel construction plate and he fell under the wheels of a truck. The ride stopped at a newly installed white “ghost bike” at the intersection’s northwest corner, where some placed flowers in the bike’s spokes and handlebars, followed by a moment of silence. The ceremony was repeated at Houston St. near Lafayette St. in memory of Donna Goodson, 41, who on June 5 was killed by a truck on Rockaway Parkway in Brooklyn.
