Last Friday, the day former Police and Corrections Commissioner Bernard Kerik pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors, “The Tombs” jail in Lower Manhattan still bore his moniker. Guards at the scene speculated the signs would soon come down, and sure enough, Mayor Bloomberg had them removed in the wee hours on Sunday morning. The official name of the jail is once again the Manhattan Detention Complex. Kerik, who was police commissioner on Sept. 11, 2001, reportedly had an extra-marital affair in a Battery Park City apartment donated to the N.Y.P.D. as a comfort place for officers assisting in the ground zero cleanup. He did not plead guilty to that act, but he did admit to accepting free contracting work from a company seeking business from the city and for failing to report a loan from a developer. He was fined $221,000, a little more than the value of the work and the loan.
