ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE IN EFFECT ALL WEEK
East River tunnel trouble over the weekend, and Hudson River tunnel trouble Thursday night: one tube of the Battery Tunnel will close 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. One lane will remain open in each direction in the other tube. In the Lincoln Tunnel, the New York-bound tube will close 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday, as will one New York-bound lane in the Holland Tunnel. The Lincoln Tunnel closure will send drivers down to the Holland, which will be slow because of its own closure. If possible, head back to the city before 11 to avoid the delays.
June is Pride month, and this weekend is packed with events: a kick-off rally at Tribeca’s Pier 26 will take place 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday. Thousands of people will cross the West Side Highway at Laight St. during rush hour. Watch out for highway crossings again Saturday afternoon, with Teaze at Pier 26 running 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pridefest, a concert series and street fair, will close Hudson St. between Abingdon Square and W 14th St. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The Pride parade runs from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, but streets along its route will be blocked off from the early morning into the evening. So, unless you’re going to watch the parade, stay away from Fifth Ave. between 41st and 8th Sts., 8th St. between Fifth and Sixth Aves., Christopher St. between Sixth Ave. and Greenwich St., and Greenwich St. between Christopher and Leroy Sts. The post-parade festival will close Hudson St. between Bethune and W 14th Sts. and W 13th St. between Ninth Ave. and W 4th St. in the afternoon and evening.
Thursday is the last day of public school before summer vacation. That means the a.m. commute will ease up a bit, and that kids will be out and about. It also means parking spots will open up in “No Parking on School Days” zones. Beware, though, since those rules will be in effect at some schools with certain events. See the letter below.
The NYC Police Museum Fair will close North Moore St. between West and Greenwich Sts. noon to 6 p.m. Friday.
A DOT Weekend Walks event in Chinatown will close Mott St. between Canal and Worth Sts. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The River to River Festival will wrap up with a block party near South Street Seaport, closing Front St. between Beekman St. and Peck Slip 2 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Chambers St. will close between Broadway and Church St. 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.
From the mailbag:
Dear Transit Sam,
My wife is a NYC teacher without a NYC DOE parking plaque. She parked in a No Parking 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. School Days. School wasn’t in session, being that the children weren’t in school, but she received a parking summons anyway. Who is right in this situation?
Charles, New York
Dear Charles,
This is a tricky situation. Your wife may well have been at fault even though school wasn’t in session. Sometimes schools will hold teacher trainings, conferences, or summer programs during which the No Parking on School Days rules are in effect. The only way to know for sure if you’re allowed to park in that zone is to call the school and find out their schedule. So, call the school your wife parked next to and see if they had an event on the day she received the summons. If there weren’t any events, get a letter from the school saying so and submit it as evidence.
