Yonkers ferry stops running

New York Water Taxi is ending ferry service between Lower Manhattan and Yonkers because too few people are riding the boats.

The last day of ferry service is scheduled for Dec. 31. The ferries relied on heavy local and state subsidies, which ended at the end of the year. The Empire State Development Corp. made one final push for the ferry over the summer by adding a Midtown stop to the route and funding a marketing campaign, but even those moves did not give the route the riders it needed.

The ferry started in 2007, funded by the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., and stopped at the World Financial Center and Pier 11 near Wall St. The ferry also used to stop at Haverstraw, but that stop was cut earlier in 2009 because of low ridership.
