Jacob deGrom scouting report

  • The righthander features a four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, slider, cutter and change-up. He throws the four-seam fastball 47 percent of the time, the two-seamer 15 percent, the slider nearly 19 percent, the cutter nine percent and the change-up about 10 percent.

  • The percentage of each pitch thrown by deGrom has changed little from 2014 to 2015, with two noticeable exceptions. His slider use has increased from 16.6 percent to 18.7 percent and his changeup has decreased from 12.2 percent to 9.7 percent.

  • Excellent control has become a hallmark for deGrom. He fired a first-pitch strike 62.8 percent of the time in 2014. That number has risen to 65.8 percent in 2015. National League starting pitchers average a 61.8 percent first-pitch strike rate.

  • In 13 starts, deGrom has struck out more hitters than innings pitched six times. He's hit double-digit strikeouts twice, fanning 10 in seven innings against Arizona on June 7 and striking out 11 in eight innings against St. Louis on May 21.

  • Batters can expect to have to earn their way on base against deGrom. He's issued one or zero walks in eight starts and two walks in three others. His season-high is four walks allowed in five innings against the Cubs on May 11.

  • In all 13 of his starts this year, deGrom has lasted at least the five innings necessary for a starting pitcher to earn a decision. He's gone seven or more innings in seven games and is 7-4 overall.
