The New York Rangers added to their blue line on Thursday evening, picking up Carson Soucy from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for the third round draft pick acquired in the Reilly Smith trade.
The Canucks have been reportedly exploring trade possibilities for the 30-year-old defenseman, who is in the second season of a three-year, $3.25 million average annual value contract.
The trade reunites Soucy and J.T. Miller, who were teammates in Vancouver for the entire 2023–24 season and the first part of 2024–25, until Miller was shipped to Rangers on Jan. 31.
Soucy waived his no-trade clause to come to the Rangers, according to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravelli.
According to Jeff Paterson of Rink Wide: Vancouver and CanucksArmy, the Canucks elected to move Soucy because the defenseman Elias Pettersson had played his way into a full-time role with the club.
Soucy, who is 6-foot-5, joins K’Andre Miller as the Rangers’ tallest defenseman. New York now has four defenseman who are six-foot-three or taller — that group includes Will Borgen and Braden Schneider.
In 59 games played this season, Soucy has three goals and 10 points, and carries a minus-13 rating. He scored the game-winning goal in Vancouver’s 3–2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday.
