Detroit has some of the best pizza in the country, but its chicken wings might need some work.
New York Yankees center fielder Cody Bellinger was scratched from the lineup for Tuesday’s matinee against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Bellinger was suffering from food poisoning and “was throwing up all night,” believed to be from some “bad wings” that he ate on Monday night.
To Boone’s knowledge, Bellinger was the only player to suffer the wrath of the wings.
The former National League MVP – who was acquired from the Chicago Cubs ahead of the 2025 season – is out of the lineup for the third time in the last five games. He missed the first two games of the Pittsburgh Pirates series at PNC Park, nursing a stiff back that Boone assured wasn’t a serious concern.
The 29-year-old lefty slugger returned to the field on Sunday, picking up a hit, stolen base, and a run scored in the club’s 5-4 loss in extra-innings.
Following a dominant spring showing, Bellinger is hitting .233 with a .611 OPS through eight games of the season. He collected his first home run in pinstripes on March 29 during the club’s historic 20-9 routing of the Milwaukee Brewers when he slugged a 451-foot moonshot, sandwiched in between solo homers from Paul Goldschmidt and Aaron Judge.
Hitting off former Yankee fan-favorite Nestor Cortes, the trio of homers marked the first time in MLB history that a starting pitcher’s first three offerings of a game were hit out of the park in succession.
Trent Grisham will patrol Bellinger’s spot in center field for the matchup, hitting eighth in the order. Grisham, who came to New York as part of the blockbuster trade for Juan Soto last season, has been on an absolute tear at the plate to start the season.
Boone told reporters on Monday that Grisham continues to “force his way” into the lineup through his scorching hot start to the season. The 28-year-old entered Tuesday hitting .423 with a whopping 1.308 OPS and three homers in nine games played – including a two-homer performance during the team’s 10-4 victory over the Pirates on Saturday.
