With a banged-up bullpen, the Yankees announced on Thursday that they signed left-handed reliever Tim Hill to a one-year deal.
The 34-year-old southpaw made 27 appearances for the Chicago White Sox this season, going 1-0 with a 5.87 ERA across 23 innings of work before he was designated for assignment on June 12. He was released six days later on Tuesday.
Hill has parts of seven seasons of MLB experience, appearing across two seasons with the Kansas City Royals in 2018 and 2019 and four seasons with the San Diego Padres from 2020 to 2023. He is 17-14 with a 4.30 career ERA and four saves.
This season, he has yet to allow a home run and has a ground-ball rate of 65.6%, which ranks third-best in the majors. Since his MLB debut in 2018, his 29.9% of inherited runners scored ranks 10th in all of baseball.
The Yankees’ bullpen took a hit earlier this week when they placed Ian Hamilton and Cody Poteet on the injured list. They already lost Jonathan Loaisiga for the season after he underwent Tommy John surgery.
