Steam pipe explosion traffic guide: Flatiron District road closures

The steam pipe explosion in the Flatiron District Thursday morning created a giant crater on Fifth Avenue, and the ensuing emergency response shut down several surrounding streets.

Over the weekend, several streets began to open up to pedestrians and cars.

Here’s the latest transit information, provided by the city’s Office of Emergency Management:

  • 18th, 19th, and 22nd streets are now open
  • Fifth Avenue between 20th and 21st street remains closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic – with the exception of MTA buses
  • Buses are bypassing all stops between 18th and 23rd streets along Fifth Avenue
