A 90-year-old man was crossing a store-lined street when he was struck and killed by a moped driver in Brooklyn on Tuesday morning.
According to law enforcement sources, the victim was crossing East 14th Street in Sheepshead Bay at around 9:34 a.m. on July 8 when the horrific incident occurred.
An early investigation showed that an “unidentified individual” on a blue moped was heading southbound on East 14th Street traveling through the intersection at Avenue U at a green traffic light when the driver barreled into the victim while he was in the crosswalk, heading from the southwest to southeast corner of the street.
The driver kept going as the victim sustained severe trauma to the head, police said.
Officers from the 61st Precinct rushed to the scene after receiving a 911 call about the collision. EMS brought the severely injured man to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.
Police are withholding the victim’s name pending family notification.
No arrests have been made yet. The moped driver did not remain at the scene, but the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is continuing its investigation.
The incident follows another tragic incident involving a two-wheeled device on May 17. A 58-year-old man was killed when an e-scooter driver crashed into him as he attempted to cross a one-way residential street on Staten Island. The scooter driver was also hurt in the incident, but was listed in stable condition.
