Bronx man shot to death in city’s first reported homicide of 2020

The new year got off to a deadly start in the Bronx, as a 29-year-old man was shot to death inside an apartment on New Year’s Day morning, authorities said.

It’s believed to be the first reported homicide in New York City in 2020.

Officers from the 43rd Precinct and NYPD PSA 8 responded to a 911 call at 10:29 a.m. on Jan. 1 regarding a man in need of assistance within the Bronx River Houses on East 174th Street near Stratford Avenue.

Upon arriving, they were directed to a third-floor apartment, where they found the victim with gunshot wounds to his head and neck. Responding EMS units pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police withheld his identity, pending family notification.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

Homicides increased across the city in 2019, with 315 murders reported as of Dec. 29, according to the New York Daily News
