Most New Yorkers try to avoid Times Square — one exception being theater.
And with the last of the current Broadway season’s openings happening this week, the Great White Way is in full swing. This season has seen new productions based on movies (“Waitress,” “School of Rock”) and books (“American Psycho,” “Tuck Everlasting”), as well as revivals (“She Loves Me,” “The Crucible,” “The Color Purple,” “Fully Committed”) and completely original creations (“Eclipsed,” “Bright Star,” the juggernaut that is “Hamilton”), to name but a few.
To help pair some dinner with that show, we asked several stars of new Broadway shows their Theater District go-tos. Bon appetit, and break a leg.
Alex Brightman
Dewey Finn in the musical “School of Rock” at the Winter Garden Theatre
His pick: The House of Brews, 302 W. 51st St., 212-541-7080
“I have been going to this place for years and have never been disappointed. The staff is amazingly amazing. They have a billion beers. But mostly, they have great food that is easy, fast and delicious. Might I suggest the Jameson [Irish] Burger. It’s a cheeseburger, cooked perfectly with fries ON IT, and a Jameson gravy on top. It sounds like a lot, but it works so insanely well. Make sure you’re hungry or share it before you go see a show. They also have great daily specials. But most importantly, the staff are great. Some of the coolest dudes and dudettes in midtown.”
Jesse Tyler Ferguson
In the one-man show “Fully Committed” at the Lyceum Theatre
His pick: Joe Allen, 326 W. 46th St., 212-581-6464
“The classic pre-theater spot. The food and service are great and the chances of seeing some fabulous classic stage actor enjoying a Caesar salad are pretty high.”
Kimiko Glenn
Dawn in the musical “Waitress” at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre
Her pick: Glass House Tavern, 252 W. 47th St., 212-730-4800
“Glass House Tavern feels like home because it is a popular place for the Broadway community to hang and they are right next to our theater! It is a great place to grab a drink or a bite after a show.”
