True Spec Golf, the industry’s premier custom club fitting retailer, has just opened up at Chelsea Piers to help New Yorkers get the right fitting gear.
True Spec Golf just joined the Chelsea Piers community this past March, giving New York City golfers the chance to get properly fitted for their golf clubs. According to Anthony Newville, COO of True Spec Golf, the choice to bring True Spec Golf to Chelsea Piers was a pretty obvious choice for the brand.
“Chelsea Piers is one of the most iconic driving ranges in the world. It’s hard not to cycle through golf Instagram and not see a post of Chelsea Piers and the Hudson in the background,” Newville told amNewYork. “In addition, the investments that the Chelsea Piers company has made into the property just shows that their commitment to bringing an unbelievable range of experiences to lower Manhattan is very much in lockstep with who we are.”
Because every person is a different height, there is no “one size fits all” option for golf clubs, and there are so many different brands, styles and types of clubs to choose from. It can also be hard to find the right fit for left-handed golf players, as many brands cater to right-handed people.
That’s where True Spec Golf comes in. According to Newville, their approach is to help you find the right fitting equipment based on science without the overwhelming nature of going in blind to find clubs that work for you.

“We are very big on experience, first and foremost. Golf, in general, can be very daunting for players of all types of abilities, specifically on the equipment side,” said Newville. “That’s really where we feel the huge need is, providing that expertise that regardless of the player’s abilities or how long that they’ve been playing, custom fitting is incredibly important for everybody.”
Before you go in for your custom fitting, you’ll start the process with a pre-fitting interview, where you can inform True Spec Golf of any physical limitations or injuries that must be considered when finding your clubs. Once you’re in the store, a True Spec Golf employee will set you up with different club setups to try, with different clubheads and shafts of varying sizes and weights to choose from, using state-of-the-art technology to help determine which clubs will suit your needs the best.
Then, when it’s all said and done, you can order clubs right at the store, which will then be hand-crafted at the True Spec Golf facility in Scottsdale, Arizona, and delivered to you.
“We have a total of over 70,000 combinations for our customers to try, and we use some of the best launch monitors, which help our master fitters make the best decisions for custom clubs for our customers,” said Newville. “I think what really sets us apart versus our competition is our universal tip adapter system, which is called Club Conex, which allows our demos to basically be the same weight as the customer’s golf club.”

And, regardless of whether you’re replacing your whole golf setup or are just looking for one specific upgrade, True Spec Golf works with your budget, so you’re not breaking the bank in your custom gear journey.
“It’s worth investing in golf clubs that are perfectly fit for you. One of the other misconceptions that we always try to break is the fact that custom fitting has to be expensive. That’s not necessarily true,” said Newville. “We work with budgets of all varying values, and you know our goal is to get the perfectly fit custom fit product for our customers within their budget to help them enjoy golf more.”
Though it has only been open since March, the Chelsea Piers location of True Spec Golf has already had tremendous feedback from customers and Chelsea Piers frequenters.
“We’re fortunate that NYC Chelsea Piers is now our fourth location in the greater NYC area, but Manhattan specifically is an area that we feel has been underserved from the custom fitting golf community,” said Newville. “That’s why we’re invested heavily into it and we are seeing it pay dividends already with the amount of bookings and people coming in to check us out.”
