3 local nonprofits earn top awards

Three local nonprofits that serve children, the homeless and job-seekers were awarded top prizes in the 2013 New York Community Trust-New York Magazine Nonprofit Excellence Awards.

The Children’s Village, Corporation for Supportive Housing and BronxWorks took the first, second and third awards, respectively, beating out nearly 60 competitors and earning tens of thousands of dollars after a nine-month judging process, officials said yesterday.

“The techniques of the best-run nonprofits offer great lessons to scores of other nonprofits as well as small businesses across New York State,” said Lorie Slutsky, President of The New York Community Trust.

The Nonprofit Excellence Awards began in 2007, and since then some 550 nonprofits have applied for awards, 21 of which have been recognized.

The nonprofits were judged by a 33-member committee in the following areas: focus on results, governance structure, financial management, human resources, diversity and responsiveness, IT practices, communications and fundraising.
