3 dead as Villager’s plane crashes in N.J.

Dr. Margaret Smith, 70, a West Village resident and dean at New York Medical College in Westchester, was killed along with two family members on Monday evening July 6 when she lost control of her plane as she was landing at Essex County Airport in Fairfield, N.J. Smith, her stepson Michael Ferguson and his wife Theresa, were returning from the family vacation home in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on Lake Champlain. Smith, a leader in the field of arthritis and rheumatology, lived with her husband Matt Ferguson on W. 11th St. She was a partner with another stepson of an agency that helped former St. Vincent’s Hospital nurses get other jobs in the area.
