* The popularity of the Neighborhood Singers was steadily growing, reported The Villager, sponsor of the weekly gatherings at Scudder School Auditorium at 66 Fifth Ave. The Bryants, the paper’s founders, were firm believers in singing.
* The Greenwich Village Historical Society held a “patriotic dinner-dance” at Fraunces Tavern, 54 Pearl St. The guest speaker was Kitty Cheatham, a descendant of the Washington family.
* The winners of the Hearns essay contest were announced at a packed auditorium of the department store on 14th St. The subject of the essay was “Why Hearns Grew So Fast in 1933.” There were 13 grand-prize winners, who each got $1,000. Of the 7,000 contest entrants, more than one out of 10 were Villagers. The Pickens Sisters of radio fame announced the winners.
* “Your waist should be really pinched in, or give that effect, to look smart this season. Not exactly in the Mae West manner, but definitely a waistline at the normal or just below, whichever is most becoming to you,” read an ad called “Villager News from Wannamker’s — Accessories Spring, 1934.” “Heels are lower,” the ad noted. “That is the most important thing in shoes this season.”
