Ninth Precinct Community Council President Jerry Shea and more than 100 friends and neighbors honored Detective Jaime Hernandez, above center, for his 20 years of service as a community affairs officer at the Ninth Precinct at an extraordinary surprise event on Sept. 17. Deputy Inspector Dennis DeQuatro, the precinct’s commanding officer, brought a large contingent of precinct officers to the East Village event at the Ukrainian National Home on Second Ave. Detective Hernandez was given a seat of honor in a throne and serenaded with songs. Jaime Hernandez, Jr., 21, a member of the U.S. Coast Guard’s police unit, stationed in Baltimore, Md., was on hand for the community tribute to his father, below. The celebration was a surprise for Hernandez, Sr., who thought he was going to a routine community forum. “You guys make my job here easy — you, the members of the community,” Hernandez told the well-wishers.
