Alvin Jerome Baltrop, photographer of the gay scene for 30 years and a longtime East Village resident, died on Feb. 1 at the age of 54 after a long struggle with cancer.
He documented the lives and times of gay men who frequented the West Side piers in the days before AIDS gave a tragic turn to gay life.
Kelly Cogswell, editor of The Gully online magazine, recalled his generosity and concern for young gays cast off by their families and living on the streets.
Baltrop’s life and art will be celebrated Sat. Feb. 28 from 2 – 4 p.m. at St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery, 131 E. 10th St.
