This crane began rising from the foundation of Tower 4 at the World Trade Center site Wednesday and became visible to nearby residents. Tower 4 is the farthest along of the three towers Silverstein Properties is building on the site, but Silverstein’s progress could slow down if the Port Authority does not clear the tower site of a wall that supports the No. 1 train subway box.
The Port Authority is paying Silverstein $300,000 a day until the authority takes down the wall and adds other finishing touches to the sites for Towers 2, 3 and 4.
As the Port works to meet the deadlines executive director Chris Ward set last fall, loud late-night work began once again last week after a respite of several months. The Port Authority warned residents last week that workers would be driving mini-piles for the underground mezzanine of the PATH hub as late as 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday.
“We just need more hours in the day to get the work done,” said Steve Coleman, Port spokesperson.
That was not what Pat Moore, who lives across the street from the site, wanted to hear.
“I don’t understand why all the noisy work cannot be done during daylight hours,” Moore said.
The late-night work will last through the end of the month.
