After a complaint was made about “overcrowding” at Le Souk nightclub at 45-47 Avenue B between Third and Fourth Sts. early last Sunday morning, firefighters and police responded to the scene. Firefighter Manuel Martinez, a department spokesperson, said he did not have information on who made the complaint at 1:36 a.m. Martinez said the firefighters left the club and “the job was closed” at 2:48 a.m. According to a witness, firefighters at the scene asked the club’s managers for paperwork and then did a thorough inspection inside Le Souk. Martinez did not say if the firefighters had in fact found the club to be overcrowded. A Le Souk manager did not return a call by press time. The popular club, owned by two Egyptian brothers, opened a year and a half ago, complete with swirling Klieg lights — that shone in upstairs neighbors’ apartments. The club features belly dancing and hookah smoking. According to reports, the sidewalk in front of the place is frequently crowded with patrons waiting to enter. As they have done off and on for several weeks now, Ninth Precinct police were diverting southbound traffic on Avenue B at Seventh St. There is a proposal to make the avenue one-way on its lower end.
