The Greenwich Village Blazers knew they would have all they could handle when they faced The Yorkville Dodgers in the first round of Senior Softball Division playoffs on Sat., June 12. They had played the Dodgers only three weeks earlier and in that game had to come from behind in their last at-bats to pull out the victory. This time the Blazers’ comeback fell short, with the Dodgers holding on to claim a 14-10 victory and advance to the semifinals.
The game was well played with good pitching, batting and defense by both teams and was tied going into the top of the fifth inning. But the Dodgers came up with four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
The pitchers for both teams were impressive. Elisa Shapiro pitched a complete game for the Dodgers and Laura Manos-Hey went the distance for the Blazers, despite an injury to her pitching hand suffered in the fifth inning. Playing second base for the Blazers, Brianne Hanley put in a courageous performance. Playing through an injury, Hanley made sparkling plays all game in the field and went 3-for-4 at the plate, with 3 R.B.I.
The Blazers finished their season with a 6-4 record.
