Doris Diether, a Community Board 2 member and zoning consultant, will give a series of four Wednesday lectures in January on New York City zoning at the CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Ave.
Each lecture in the series, “Decoding Zoning in NYC: What You Need to Know to Work With NYC Architecture/Construction Businesses,” runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and can be taken for American Institute of Architects credit.
On Jan. 5, Diether will give an overview of zoning past and present, covering the development of zoning in 1916, the reasons for it and how it works, the difference between landmarking and zoning and the different districts and what is permitted in each. The second lecture, on zoning and aesthetic impact, on Jan. 12 will show how to read a zoning map and will consider how zoning affects the appearance of the city.
On Jan. 19, Diether will consider what uses and signs are permitted in each district. The last lecture will cover the roles and interactions among various city agencies involved in zoning, the Board of Standards and Appeals, City Planning Commission, Department of Buildings, community boards and the impact communities and citizens can have on zoning.
